All information
PhD Programme

The Ph.D. programme in Management of the University of Bologna aims to train research degree students who are to become leading researchers in the field of management, banking and finance and serve as faculty at top-rated universities or leaders in corporate, financial and international organizations worldwide.

The Programme is organized by the Department of Management of the University of Bologna and is created by the integration of two doctoral programs previously offered by the Department: the PhD in Business Administration (Dottorato in Direzione Aziendale) and the PhD in Financial Markets and Intermediaries (Dottorato in Mercati e Intermediari Finanziari).

The Ph.D in  Management is a full-time, 4 year-programme offering its students a broad and inter-disciplinary education in the fields of business and finance studies and management research. It provides candidates with strong theoretical foundations in social science disciplines and a deep knowledge of research methods applied to management, banking and financial problems. It offers specializations in two major concentration areas:

Doctoral students are expected to have full-time status, attend core and elective courses, participate in research projects conducted by Faculties,  and present their works at research seminars, international conferences and in international journals. Passing all course-exams is a formal condition for being admitted to the final examination, which involves defending the thesis before an examining committee.  The PhD degree in General Management (Dottorato in General Management) by the University of Bologna will be awarded after the final examination.

All courses are held in English and our students are immersed in an international research environment, wherein several seminars, summer schools and workshops are organized with the participation of internationally renowned scholars. Our program attract students from various countries including Albania, Brasil, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Island, Lithuania, Nigeria, Pakistan, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine.

1. Program Overview and Courses

The PhD programme in Management is structured as a four-year programme.

During the first year PhD candidates will attend an introductory course in Statistics and three core courses aiming to provide  theoretical foundations in fields of business (course in "Strategic Management") and quantitative methods(course in "Econometrics"). Moreover, a “Research Methods for Social Science” course will familiarize students with fundamental epistemological and ethical issues in social science.

Moreover, PhD candidates will have the opportunity to specialize according to their research interests in one of two different concentration areas offered by the Programme: the track in General Management and the track in Banking and Finance, by taking 5 additional core courses.

During the second year PhD candidates will complete their coursework by taking and 3 elective courses selected from a wide range of options. See the links below for a description of the concentration areas and a list of courses that will be offered in the Programme.

In addition to doing their coursework, students benefit from a stimulating research environment by attending seminars, colloquia and dissertation defenses. Students are also required to develop their own research interests and to present their work regularly both internally and at professional conferences.

At the end of the training program (after the third semester), each Ph.D. candidate should prepare and present a Research proposal outlining the objectives and research questions, theoretical foundations and research design of the dissertation he or she intends to pursue.

Once the research proposal is approved, the Ph.D. candidate will focus on the pursuit of the doctoral thesis under the supervision of 3 faculty members. The dissertation must be approved by the supervisors and the Doctoral Programme Committee before the the candidate can defend it  in front of an external Doctoral Thesis Examination Committee.

Mobility period

After the approval of the Research Proposal, Ph.D. students can spend a period asvisiting scholar in a foreign university, depending on their research interests. During the mobility period, candidates will have the opportunity to attend courses and seminars offered by the hosting institution in order to specialize in a concentration area in which the institute excels, to establish stronger links with international faculties within their specialization area and develop research activities related to their dissertation work at a transnational level. The period abroad must be approved by the Academic Board and a limited number of scholarships will be made available on a competitive basis.
